Fun with Numbers

Learning numbers and English at the same time can be pretty much interesting and exciting for EFL kindergarteners. They can go beyond simple counting to being able to name random numbers when shown the figure and then to recognizing, responding and writing to numbers in words.

Some students learn numbers faster or slower than others, but this should not worry EFL teachers too much. In a lot of times my students have to always make a conscious effort to count in English because they tend to quickly forget and automatically switch to count in Thai language. But for some reason children love counting and this is a great opportunity to introduce numbers to them using fun and meaningful activities.

Here below are some ideas and links that I have used in my class. (I will update this soon.)

“Fun with Numbers” – This has allowed my kids to practice counting in English numerous times. They have to count the number of beads to match the number on the kite.  Inserting the beads into the pipe cleaner was also a good fine motor skill activity for them. Credits and thanks to this idea I got from teachbesideme.com. Here is the link for this activity:  https://teachbesideme.com/kite-themed-preschool-math/

Here are another handy ideas and resources you can use for counting apple activities. I pull these out easily whenever I need some station activities for numbers. I printed and laminated these last school year and have used it again this current school year. =)

In addition, here is a free printable apple counting booklet. Here students have to identify the number and draw appropriate number of apples. You can either print this as a booklet or cut-out and laminate individual page to recycle the material.
