Early Readers Word Work Activities

Beginning reading can be challenging but integrating various hands-on activities can be fun and rewarding for both students and teachers.

Building c-v-c words is a good way to practice early readers. Here I will be sharing some activities we do in class. Feel free to download if you find this helpful and appropriate for your own kids. These are better utilized when printed in color and laminated for long lasting use.

First one to be “c-v-c word building” using bottle caps. Kids are to identify the picture, sound out the letters and form the words. Have fun!

Updated for second c-v-c activity: SPELLING FILM STRIPS

This is great for students to practice c-v-c words. There are 12 strips with 48 picture words that cover short a, short e, short i, short o and short u words. The word families included here are: at, an, ap, et, en, ot, op, in, ig, ip, ub and un family.

I recommend to simply print, cut and laminate these and use dry erase markers to write on the strips for lasting use.

An additional template is included too in case you want to make your own set. Be blessed and have fun!
